Do you enjoy watercoloring? Did you know that July is World Watercoloring Month?
I can’t let this month go by without sharing some watercoloring tips. In the next few posts, we’ll look into some of the ways we can watercolor with a few Stampin’ Up! tools. Today we will focus on Watercolor Wash.
I made this card a few months ago before the 2022-2023 Annual Catalog went live so two of the In Colors and the sentiment I used are retired. You can easily substitute other colors to create a similar card. My focal point was the sunflower from the Celebrate Sunflowers set. You can see more cards with this set here and here. The background gave this sunflower card a wow look and it also softened the look of the sunflower.
How To: Watercolor Wash
You need a few items to create a Watercolor Wash.
- Watercolor Paper or Shimmery Cardstock
- Water Painters or soft brush with bowl of water
- Ink
- Water
Here’s how:
- Fill your water painter with water.
- Wet your watercolor paper with the brush.
- Once it’s wet where you want it, pick up some ink with your brush (you can squeeze a drop or two of refill ink on a clear block or squeeze ink onto inside of ink pad lid) and apply color to cardstock by dabbing and/or moving brush in whatever direction you desire.
- Apply ink while cardstock is still wet. Add more water if necessary.
- If you want the color darker, just add ink. Want it lighter? Add water.
- You can add more than one color and allow them to blend. Pick colors that won’t create a mud look unless that’s what you’re going for!
You can make lines or splotches of color. If your cardstock is too wet and is dripping, move cardstock around or you can dab gently with a paper towel. Let paper dry before stamping. Each one you make will look different.
