A Watercolored Beauty with Painted Posies Embossing Folder

We come to the end of World Watercoloring Month. This month we explored four different watercoloring techniques – Watercolor Wash, Embossing Resist Watercolor, No Line Watercoloring and creating an easy watercolor look with ink. We used 4 coloring tools – Watercolor Pencils, Soft Pastels, Water Painters and Blender Pens. Today’s focus is watercoloring with embossing folders to get a watercolor look.

Although today is the last project I’ll be sharing with you this month on watercoloring, it won’t be the last. There are many other ways to watercolor that we haven’t explored yet.

The Painted Posies 3D Embossing folder is a 6″ x 6-1/4″ folder and it’s so pretty. Whether it’s colored or not, it makes a beautiful background or focal point.

When watercoloring large panels, cut your cardstock a bigger size than you want for your project and tape it down on all 4 sides. This will prevent your cardstock from bending and will stay flat. You can use painter’s tape, washi tape, anything low tack.

How To: Watercoloring with Embossing Folders

Supplies Needed: Watercolor paper or shimmery cardstock, water painters, ink, embossing folder

  • Run your watercolor paper through embossing machine with folder of your choice.
  • If your paper tends to crack whenever you run it through the embossing machine, spritz your paper lightly with water before running it through. This step will prevent it from getting any cracks in the paper.
  • With a brush, color an area. Begin by laying some color down. Wet your brush and pick up color from where you laid it down to finish coloring that area. Your brush should not be dripping wet. Dab on paper towel or rag, if necessary.
  • Clean your brush between colors.
  • If you wish to color background, I find it easier to color it first. Using a fine tip brush allows you to get into the crevices between sections. Spread color throughout.
  • Optional – after you’re done coloring, you can emboss your paper again with the same folder for a deeper impression. Because it was previously embossed and is colored, it’s easy to align. Make sure the colored side is facing the front of the folder.

There are 2 sides to an embossing folder – debossed and raised sides. You want the front to face the debossed side which usually is the side with the Stampin’ Up! logo.

Card Details

I wanted to re-emboss the panel again, but didn’t remember until after I glued it down. I guess I have to make another one! It was hard to capture the beauty of this card. In person, it looks like a watercolor painting. I need to use this color combo more often because I love it.

  • Thick Basic White cardstock for card base – 4-1/4″ x 11″ scored at 5-1/2″
  • Embossed panel – watercolor paper 5-1/4″ x 4″ mounted with dimensionals onto card base
  • Woven 1/2″ ribbon was cut in half to create a narrower trim.
  • The label for sentiment was die cut from the Meadows dies and trimmed on one side. The sentiment from the Pansy Patch set was stamped with Gorgeous Grape.
  • Background was colored first with Balmy Blue ink.
  • Using a water painter, flowers were colored with Poppy Parade, Fresh Freesia and Pear Pizzazz.
  • Leftover small strip from trimmed cardstock was added to the inside of card.
