Waterfront On Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

A Little History. . .

According to Wikipedia, Father’s Day was first celebrated in a Fairmount, West Virginia church on July 5, 1908 to honor  the many men who died in the Monogah Mining Accident in 1907 which left many children fatherless. It was Grace Golden Clayton’s suggestion to her minister that these fathers should be honored. It was celebrated on the day of her father’s birthday who had passed away. However, due to the July 4th celebration, the death of a 16 year old girl on that day, the fact that it wasn’t promoted outside this town, nor was there a proclamation from the church or council, Father’s day was not celebrated again till years later.

In 1910 Sonora Smart Dodd in Spokane Washington heard a sermon about Mother’s Day and suggested to her pastor that fathers should have a day to be honored.  Her father was a single parent who raised six children on his own after the death of his wife. She suggested the first week in June (her father’s birthday) but it was celebrated on the third week to give the ministers time to prepare a sermon. Although attempts in 1916 and 1924 were made to recognize this event, it wasn’t until 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson designated the 3rd Sunday in June as Father’s Day and in 1972 it was signed into law by President Richard Nixon and became an official holiday.

I am blessed that my father is still around and lives close by. He is a special man who worked hard all his life. He took his role of responsibility serious as he cared for his family. He is caring, generous, hospitable, funny and loved dearly. I cherish all the memories I’ve had throughout my growing and adult years. What a wonderful father and grandfather he’s been to us!

Now onto today’s card . . . for my last Father’s Day card, I’m using the Waterfront stamp set. There are no coordinating dies, but there are many creative possibilities with this set. For the background, I used strips of cardstock that coordinated with the colors in my scene and embossed them with the Subtle embossing folder. This was a fairly quick card and I loved the way it turned out – it’s so cheerful. When I look at this card, it relaxes me and makes me think of  some tropical island.

Same Card, Different Sentiment

Here’s the exact same card but with one of the Waterfront stamp greetings. The inside sentiment continues the thought from the front by saying “and the hard times easier.
