Did you know that today is Senior Citizen’s Day in the United States? President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation on August 19, 1988 to declare August 21 to be National Senior Citizen’s Day so that we can take time to recognize our senior citizens “for all they have achieved in life and for all they continue to accomplish”. Nowadays, many are living longer and healthier lives.
I think it’s safe to say that we all know at least one senior citizen – whether it be our parents, grandparents, neighbors, or friends. Some are healthy, and some are struggling. I have the privilege of knowing an elderly woman at my church who is 101 and you would never think so. She is amazing–she lives alone, is healthy, comes to church every week, has a great sense of humor, dresses beautifully and is a pleasure to talk to.
Most of our seniors, don’t need anything – they just need to be cherished. How do you feel when you receive a handmade card in the mail? Consider sending or better yet, hand delivering a handmade card to that special senior citizen in your life. Handmade cards or other handmade gifts are always nice to receive because it makes the recipient feel special knowing that someone thought of them.
