What do you do with the cardstock after you die cut or punch with it? Like many of us, we throw it away. But how about if you can use it to make another card with it? That’s today’s focus – using our die cut negative as a mask.
I use my die cutting machine a lot. A few weeks ago, I was in the process of making the card on the left. Using a 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″ cardstock to cut the frame, I noticed I still had plenty of space on the sides. I decided to use it as a mask to make a second card with the same layout.
When you die cut this piece from the Fabulous Frames, you will get 3 pieces. Your frame, the negative and the insert. Use the insert any way you like. After you’ve done your masking with the negative, save it for another time. No waste!
The Fabulous Frames die set allows you to create 6 different types of frames. Use them alone or layer them up. Here’s another card using the same frame as today.
Card Details
For the first card, I used the now retired All Together DSP as my background.
- Card base -Basic White Thick cardstock 4-1/4″ x 11″
- DSP – 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″
- Basic White 3-1/2″ x 4-3/4″ mounted with dimensionals
- Basic Black frame and Basic White insert adhered directly to white panel
- Sentiment and scrolls are from Hope & Prayer set and stamped with Memento Black ink
- Silver & gold sequins from the For Everything Fancy Sequins were adhered to sections of the scroll
I chose not to use the DSP on this card but instead used Painted Texture 3D embossing folder.
- Card base – basic black 4-1/4″ x 11″
- White embossed layer 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″
- Basic Black cardstock 3-5/8″ x 4-7/8″ mounted with dimensionals
- Front white panel 3-1/2″ x 4-3/4″
- Inked blending brushes with Pale Papaya, Pool Party, Soft Sea Foam
- Sentiment and scrolls stamped with Memento Black ink
- Glossy dots were used for top and bottom of frame
Hope & Prayer Set
If you need a set with encouraging sentiments, The Hope & Prayer set is a great one to have. The four images (cross, dove, anchor and scroll) coordinate nicely with the 4 sentiments. Any of these sentiments would work with the Fabulous Frames dies.
Take a look at your dies and next time you’re die cutting consider creating 2 cards and using the mask for one of them. You can do this with any shape – circle, ovals, flowers, butterflies, etc. Get creative!
Thanks for stopping by . . . till next time . . .
