How To Clean Your Stamps

You bought stamps and you used them to create a project. So what did you do after you used them? Did you put them away as is or did you clean them?

Here are a couple of reasons why I recommend you clean them after each use:

  • You want your stamps to last a very long time so you can enjoy them.
  • You can ruin your ink pads. How? Imagine you inked up your stamp with Real Red ink, you put it away and the next time you go to use it you ink up the stamp with Daffodil Delight (yellow) forgetting that it still has some Real Red residue. Now your Daffodil Delight ink pad has been contaminated by the Real Red ink and your image will not be the beautiful yellow color you wanted!
  • To prevent staining

Ways to Clean Stamps

  • Water – if you need to clean your stamps right away (do not immerse wood-mount stamps)
  • Baby wipes – non alcohol and non aloe (using alcohol based wipes will dry out your rubber stamps and will eventually crack)
  • Stampin’ Mist and Stampin’ Scrub.  The Stampin’ Mist cleans and conditions your stamps. The Stampin’ Scrub has 2 trays one to clean (raindrops symbol) and the other to dry (sun symbol). All you need to do is spray Stampin’ Mist, scrub on one side and dry on the other side. The Stampin’ Scrub pads are removable and washable with dishwashing soap. Air dry.
  • StazOn Cleaner if you used StazOn ink on your stamps – it cleans and conditions and prevents staining your stamps

Although you can use all of the above cleaners for photopolymer stamps, it is recommended that you use the StazOn cleaner sparingly and make sure you do not leave any traces of the cleaner on the stamp.  If your photopolymer stamps lose their stickiness or get dusty, wash them in mild soap and water.

I use all of the cleaners above but my preference is the Stampin’ Mist and Scrub (I like the fresh smell, too!). I clean my stamps 99% of the time right after I use them, but there’s that 1% when I’m in a hurry and don’t have time to clean them. To remind me that they need to be cleaned, I put them on top of the stamp case so I can clean them as soon as possible and once I do that, I put them back in their case ready to be used the next time.
