Make Your Own Holiday Cards – Part 1

Making my own Christmas cards brings me joy.  I love designing my own cards – creating them to look the way I want them to and with the perfect sentiment for me. Earlier this week, I finished making 120 cards for family and friends — they’re in the envelopes with labels and postage – ready to go. (just need to write my brief Christmas letter).  I’m usually not finished this early, but I set a goal to complete it before Thanksgiving and I’m proud to say I accomplished my goal!

I know there are some of you out there that would love to make your cards, but perhaps you’re struggling on getting started . .  . in how to come up with a design or where to start and may find the whole process overwhelming and decide that you can’t make a Christmas card.  I’m here to tell you that you can create one and it’s not too late!  Let me share with you some tips:

  • If you’re a beginner or are busy and don’t have enough time to create – keep it simple
  • Select 1-3 ink colors that appeal to you
  • Select an image you like (Stampin’ Up! has lots of cool images!)
  • Stick with one or 2 layers of card stock or go with Designer Series Paper (patterned paper) as one of the layers
  • Additional tools you will need:  Stampin’ Trimmer to cut your card stock and adhesive
  • Cut the card base layer at 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ and you’ll get 2 cards from one 8-1/2″ x 11″ sheet of card stock
  • For card ideas, look through my blog, Stampin’ Up! catalogs, card making magazines

Here’s an easy card to make with 2 layers.  It uses 2 ink colors – one for the Christmas Star and one for the sentiment.  It also has  2 different colors for the card stock – one for the image and one for the card base.  Just ink up the star & sentiment – stamp and glue the cardstock to your base! For a little dimension, add a rhinestone to the star.  Quick & easy!  To make a simple one-layer card,  go with the Very Vanilla cardstock and omit the Always Artichoke card base – then you don’t have to glue anything!
